연합뉴스는 이날 ‘국제협정엔 과학적 근거 있어야 쇠고기 수입중단’이라는 제목의 기사에서 농식품부의 발 등을 보도하면서 “태국의 미국산 쇠고기 중단조치 보도는 주한 태국대사에게 알아봤더니 사실이 아닌 것으로 확인됐다고 전했다. 태국은 30개월 미만 뼈 없는 쇠고기를 수입하고 있다.”고 보도했다.

그런 확인을 농식품부가 했는지 연합뉴스가 했는지 명확치 않다. 그러나 중요한 것은 태국 영자지 방콕 포스트가 지난 27일 태국의 미국산 쇠고기 수입 중단에 대해 상세히 보도했다는 점이다. 방콕 포스트의 관련 기사는 아래와 같다.

"태국은 미국 캘리포니아에서 광우병 소가 발견됨에 따라 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 중단한다고 태국 축산국장 트리사디 차오수안차로엔(Tritsadee Chaosuancharoen)이 발표했다.

태국은 현재 수입하고 있는 30개월 미만 쇠고기가 광우병에 감염되지 않았지만 동물 감염법에 따라 안전이 확인될 때까지 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 잠정 중단한다고 밝혔다.

태국은 외국산 쇠고기에 대한 질과 원산지를 엄격하게 검역하고 해외에서 질병 발생을 면밀히 모니터하고 있으며 광우병이 발생한 국가로부터 쇠고기 수입은 즉각 중단한다고 밝혔다.

태국은 지난해 미국으로부터 58,969kg의 쇠고기를 수입했고 올 상반기에는 37,599kg을 수입했다.

태국의 지난해 미국산 쇠고기 수입규모는 액수로 120만 달러에 그치는 65위의 수입시장이어서 미 업계에 미치는 영향은 제한적이라고 미 육류수출협회는 말했다. <방콕 포스트 27일>

Thailand is suspending imports of beef 　from the United States following the discovery of mad cow disease in California, says Tritsadee Chaosuancharoen, director-general of the Department of Livestock Development.

Washington reported on Tuesday that a cow in California had been infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease.

Imports of US beef have been temporarily halted until the department is assured that it is safe, Dr Tritsadee said on Friday.

The suspension is in accordance with the Animal Epidemics Act, even though the imports of boneless beef cuts 　from animals under 30 months of age are not affected, she said.

"Thailand is safe [　from mad cow] and is not at risk definitely because the Livestock Development Department has measures to prevent and control the disease," she added.

"We strictly inspect the quality and sources of foreign beef and closely monitor disease outbreaks in the country and overseas."

Dr Tritsadee said Thailand would stop importing beef and lamb 　from countries hit by mad cow disease immediately.

In 2011, the country imported 58,969 kilogrammes of boneless beef cuts 　from the US worth 29 million baht. In the first quarter of this year, the country imported 37,599kg worth 18 million baht.

Indonesia was the first country to suspend imports of US beef yesterday.---

태국이 미국산 쇠고기 수입 중단 조치를 취하지 않은 것으로 확인했다고 농식품부가 발표했다면 이는 중대한 과오다. 정부 기관에서 최소한의 정확한 확인 절차도 밟지 않고 발표했다면 이는 그냥 넘길 수 없는 중차대한 국민 기만행위다. 만약 연합뉴스가 그런 보도를 했다면 국가기간통신으로 있을 수 없는 잘못을 저지른 것이다. 예민한 시기에 나와서는 안될 기사가 보도 된 것은 심각한 일이다.
